4 Gent's teams this season or 3? What do you think?Owing to the problems experienced last year with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams having so many call-offs and no continuity, resulting in relegation all round, do you think we should just run the 3 teams this year and concentrate on getting promotion for the 2nd and 3rd back where they came from.
Any opinions?

Talking to yourself again John?John,
Seems like this is a forum for you and I to communicate with each other! But good of you to go to all the trouble of setting it up for that purpose!
I feel that we should concentrate on our 3 best teams, on making sure that we can turn out a full team for every game and also to create a bit of a challenge to actually get in one of the teams. A bit of friendly rivalry wouldn't go our collective games any harm, and Roddy could always do the catering for the season!
It's good to talk!

Great site john, love the chance to sound off in complete anonymity... yer reet!!
Anyway i think it would be really good to keep the same people in the teams for the whole season so the whole team spirit thing can be fostered, and not just move players up and down each week. As one of those players that was constantly being shunted around i never knew where i was one week to the next. OK having queeny strops every time i lost a match and resigning from the teams didn't help my cause but all the same...
I just remember one year it just so happened that the same team was put out for many cosecutive weeks and it was much more fun. If the first team can't put out a whole team why should the 2nd and 3rd and 4th teams suffer by loosing it's members to higher teams? Why is it so important that only the 1st should have the best players possible?

The first team was pretty consistent last year with hardly any call-offs pulling players from the lower teams. I think that is why they got promoted in the end.
The problems were really with the 2nd and 3rd Teams. The number of people calling off from matches due to injury, work commitments, holidays, etc really decimated these teams and, as a result, players were getting pulled from all over the place to fill the spaces.
Some weeks this resulted in the 4th team having to cancel their match on the actual day of the match. People were playing way out of their league and you know the results at the end of the season.
It would be great to get that team spirit back that squash-fiend mentioned. If we stick to three teams I think we could do that and, ultimately, get the 2nd and 3rd teams promoted back to where they should be.
Dave T's point that 3 teams would result in people fighting for places is a good one as well.
I must admit that 3 teams would be much easier to manage in terms of all the phoning around.
Maybe we need to discuss this in more detail at the club.

SuiggestionSuggestion,
Why not use September's mini-league to establish team order.
Pick the most logical players for 1st 2nd and 3rd teams and put them in leagues 1, 2 and 3. They then play each other as they would in a normal mini-league with the result of the 'league' determining who plays in which position at the start of the season in the teams. Clearly this would be adjusted as the season progressed based on performance and/or team tactics.
Might be worth also bearing in mind that those players who haven't made any appearance during the summer months at the club shouldn't just assume they can walk back into a team (first team excepted perhaps). Needs to be some indication that they can actually still play the game.

I think that less teams would work well and if each team had 7 or 8 members they could rotate and/or cover for each other and just play for their team. I think that we all know each others standards well enough to judge who plays in which team, and an elected captain for each team could sort out his team so one person doesn't have to sort everyone out, and if it was just the same few people it would be even less hastle.
By the way Dave, how did you know it was me?

Just a hunch Jez, just a hunch. No one does a queeny strop with quite the same 'pazazz' as you!
Editors note for Roddy's benefit; pazazz are people with cameras who try and get pictures of celebrities.

Three Teams or Four?I have read the posts with much interest and would like to take this opportunity to air my views - contentional though they may be.
Firstly, I joined SRCC to play Squash, in particular Match Squash, and was very pleased to play for the 4th team last season. That said I don't personally feel I can commit to a team knowing that due to National Defense responsabilities I have to leave mid season....
Secondly, I have to be brutal and say that there is a core of about 15 players (max) who make SRCC what it is. Thats not to say that everyone has to be regulars on a Monday/Wednesday or Friday, but there are many of the 1st and 2nd Team members (from last season) that I have never seen at the Club, let alone played... Disappointing, too right when you consider they are usually the ones with the experience and skills to pass on to others.
In addition, although its always been difficult to promote internal Ladders / Leagues, but it seems to me that they really need to be promoted and used effectively. In this way you can bring on the fighting / team ethos within the Club.
Finally, (thank God I hear you scream), NOBODY has a right to play for any team, and that honour is earnt... remember the Club is its members and whilst its great to be promoted, and win leagues, I wonder if we seek these goals at the detriment of the Club ethos and team spirit.
Some food for thought... I welcome your views / comments.

Anyone out there got any new comments about the teams so far this season.
i.e. how they are picked, who plays where, etc.
